A selection of this year's short films from the Audiovisual Arts Studio at Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín features a palette of genres ranging from documentary to drama to comedy and grotesque.

THE LAST PRIOR (CZECH REPUBLIC)

The Last Prior is a tragicomical portrait of people working in the last unreconstructed socialist department store Prior. This perfectly preserved piece of socialist culture and aesthetics houses many strange characters that are themselves stuck in time of the store’s biggest fame. Today, they feel left out, frustrated and nostalgic. The film humorously captures a bizarre atmosphere of this forgotten place and reflects a specific mood of a post-totalitarian society.

Insomniac (CZECH REPUBLIC)

Today's man spends much more time in a society of strangers and shares personal space more often than with family or friends. Why then understanding, relaxation and catharsis could not take place between us and a totally strange person who has nothing in common with us, and who can not even understand our language and tradition, but can feel the same as we do?

Red (CZECH REPUBLIC)

A shy adolescent Adam is trying to cope with the destiny of never-seen mother as well as never-ending knowledge of the universe. His astrophysics studies and desire for learning other different fields do not give him satisfying answers of how the world works so he creates his own world – a red room. A red room where he meets a familiar girl called Mada. And Mada is able to give him the right answers.

Last words (CZECH REPUBLIC)

Ordinary gangsters, Tom, Dave and Mike, don’t know each other, but each of them owns one part of the map, which can lead them to the bunch of mafia money. To reach it is possible only through their collaboration, but nobody believes to anyone, nobody wants to divide with others and no one has the problem of killing the two remaining. And are there really any money waiting for them, or it's all the refined revenge from the tombs?

GOLDEN 90'S (CZECH REPUBLIC)

The nineties were famous for introducing a brand-new chance of doing a private business after a long era of communism. The business was done everywhere and with everything, even illegally. People stole and people killed – mostly in a very amateur way. The film is a tragicomic reflection of the age in which everything was possible and nothing was a problem – only a few people had to end up very badly.

ON AIR (CZECH REPUBLIC)

Praying is like radio broadcasting, the transmission goes one-way only. We are not provided with any replies unless a miracle happens. “Is there anybody on the other end listening at all?“ Rosťa the presenter is wondering. In case there would be anyone listening, are they on the same wavelength? Or should there be a gentle wave-storming on the radio?

KOWBOI (CZECH REPUBLIC)

A beautiful woman and a masked armed man in the story where it is not a good idea to pretend to be someone else. For the consequences of natural human desires seem to be as absurd as the way of their demonstration.

Contra (CZECH REPUBLIC)

In a cheap hotel room, a meeting between Patrik and Rudolf takes place. One of them laughs at conspiracy theories, the other believes them. Who will have the last word?
Conspiracy theories, disinformation or fake news. A modern-day phenomenon that many people fall prey to, willingly or not. Kontra, a short film, takes it to the extreme to show how these "alternative facts" can be highly persuasive.
